Ride Leaders info

The link at the bottom of the page provides Cycling UK’s comprehensive advice for ride leaders and the bullet points below list key points on how we lead rides at SVCC:

• Towards the end of each month the Rides Coordinator will publish an empty rides list spreadsheet for the next month and invite club members to enter details for a ride they would like to lead
• Decide on the outline of your proposed ride in terms of destination, distance, refreshments and grade and enter these details into the spreadsheet
• The new rides list will be published at the start of the next month
• A few days before your ride provide more details via email and optionally WhatsApp. These details should include the time and location of the ride start, refreshment details, route, distance and grade. Many club members also provide a link to a public ride on Ride with GPS. 
• Conduct the ride as follows:
  • Arrive promptly 
  • Welcome club members
  • Split the ride into groups of not more than 7 members
  • Remind members to maintain gaps between the groups to allow other road user to overtake the club in stages
  • Nominate one person as the back-marker and possibly sub-group leaders and back-markers (see below)
  • Start the ride a few minutes after the agreed start time in case any members are running late
  • During the ride, do not let the whole group get too far spread out – know roughly where everyone is
  • During the ride, stop at a convenient and safe place at each junction and make sure you can see the back-marker before continuing
  • When you return home send an email to stroudvalleyscc@gmail.com containing the date and a list of the riders

    The backmarker should be an experienced rider and his/her role is to help any rider falling behind from the group either for mechanical reasons or because a rider is slowing or owing to an accident. As well as assisting the rider in difficulty the backmarker must somehow inform the ride leader either by passing a message via the group or via a phone or by riding to the front of the group. If the nominated backmarker cannot complete the ride or decides to leave before the end then another one should be nominated. The backmarker should also confirm that all riders are gathered at appropriate times during the ride.
